Funding supports researchers’ access to critical data management tools and services that facilitate the reuse of research data
The ability for Canadian researchers to find and reuse research data accelerates discovery and innovation.

CANARIE, a vital component of Canada’s digital research infrastructure ecosystem supporting research, education and innovation, today announced $2M in funding to support the Canadian Association of Research Libraries’ (CARL) Portage Network. CARL Portage is a national, library-based research data management (RDM) network that fosters initiatives to build capacity and to coordinate activities in research data management.
The ability to manage and reuse research data helps accelerate discovery, allows for reproducibility of scientific results, and maximizes return on investment of research funding. Research data management best practices help ensure the accessibility and protection of data during the research lifecycle and beyond, and help meet growing requirements of research ethics and reproducibility, along with evolving funder policies.
This funding broadens the functionality of current Portage services and tools and adds capacity to national RDM resources. Key projects funded by this investment augment and strengthen CARL Portage’s national data stewardship activities and capitalize on the momentum of its foundational work to date. It will allow continued development and operationalization of national, collaborative RDM platforms, tools, and services including:
- Federated Research Data Repository & National Discovery Service (in partnership with Compute Canada Federation including regional partners, University of Saskatchewan, Simon Fraser University, and University of Toronto);
- National Instance of Dataverse (in partnership with OCUL Scholars Portal, University of Toronto); and
- Data Management Planning Assistant (in partnership with University of Alberta and CASRAI).
The first two services support data deposit, discovery, and subsequent reuse by providing robust, multidisciplinary data repository options for Canadian researchers. The third provides researchers with an easy-to-use online tool that facilitates the creation of data management plans. All of these initiatives support RDM best practices and emerging funder requirements.
