Hugo Dominguez

Business Security Officer, Desjardins

Hugo Dominguez is a Business Security Officer at Desjardins. As part of his role, he acts as a delegate of the Chief Security Officer and supports different business sectors in their strategic planning for different areas of security, including IT security, physical security, protection of personal information and the fight against fraud.

Before joining Desjardins, Hugo held positions as Director of IT Security and Infrastructure at McGill University and the University of Quebec in Montreal. As part of his duties within these institutions, Mr. Dominguez was responsible for coordinating and supervising a team of professionals responsible for planning and managing the security of a large-scale university IT infrastructure of more than 215,000 users, 15,000 workstations, 1,200 servers, 25,000 concurrent users of wireless networks, etc.

Prior to working in the higher ed sector, Hugo was a manager with the Global Risk Management Department of PricewaterhouseCoopers where he carried out numerous IT security assessment and governance mandates.

Hugo is also a lecturer in various university programs where he teaches technology risk management and IT infrastructure and holds various certifications including CISA and ITIL Foundation.

Jon Ferguson

Jon Ferguson leads the Cybersecurity & DNS services unit at CIRA that builds upon the organization’s world class DNS services to provide cybersecurity services and training to Canadians and the global internet community.

For the past 15 years, Jon has worked in product leadership roles for organizations building globally distributed Internet of Things and Cybersecurity solutions.  Prior to joining CIRA, he was Director of Public Key Infrastructure & IOT at Entrust where he helped launch a suite of products including next generation, SaaS based security solutions to the company’s global customer base.

Jon holds a Bachelor of Geographic Analysis degree from Toronto Metropolitan University.  Jon is an avid sports fan and you will find him on the Golf Course, baseball field playing in the local Fastball league or engaged in other outdoor activities with his two sons and wife.

Henry Hughes

Chief Technology Officer, Cybersecurity | JISC

As Jisc’s Chief Technology Officer – Cybersecurity, Henry Hughes is responsible for the capability and capacity of defensive systems that protect members and customers across UK education and research. Jisc operates the Janet network and the National Research and Education Network (NREN) for the UK. Internationally, the Janet network interconnects with 37 other NRENs across Europe.

Henry has over 25 years’ experience working within digital infrastructures, across networking, access and identity management, and security. He led the establishment of DDoS defensive capability for the Janet network in parallel with cyber threat intelligence and layered network defensive services capabilities. He continues to lead and co-ordinate the expansion of defensive capabilities and improvement to cyber resilience across the UK education and research sectors. Henry is an advocate for knowledge and skills development, outreach, and training in the cybersecurity context.

Internationally, Henry works with other NRENs and research organisations in efforts to improve cybersecurity and to promote better understanding of the wider threat landscape. Henry is Co-Chair of the GN5-1 security work stream, a two-year EU programme, part of the 7-year strategic framework of individual programmes that form part of Horizon Europe. GN5-1 work, in the security context, includes the establishment of an international threat intelligence sharing hub and the protection of terabit scale network infrastructure supporting e-science.

Daniel J. Michaluk

Partner and National Co-Leader, Cybersecurity Group | BLG

Daniel Michaluk is a well-recognized cybersecurity, privacy, and information management lawyer, with significant experience working with education and public sector organizations in Canada.

In this capacity, Daniel helps organizations to respond optimally to security and cyber incidents, defend security and privacy complaints, claims and grievances, handle complex freedom of information matters and appeals, and address security and other operational issues while minimizing privacy risks.

Daniel has maintained a privacy and security practice since 2003 and has acted as a security incident “coach” since 2006. He has represented clients in significant privacy, security, and freedom of information litigation, including at the Ontario Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada.

Isaac Straley

Chief Information Security Officer | University of Toronto

Isaac has held this inaugural position since December 2018, where he oversees the university’s Information Security program. He is responsible for ensuring that U of T’s networks, systems, and information are protected and meet regulatory and policy requirements. He also identifies, evaluates, and reports information security risks to the Information Security Council and the university’s senior administrative team.

Previously, he held the dual post of CISO and privacy officer at the University of California, Irvine, where he worked for 13 years. In 2021, Isaac was named CISO of the year at the CISO Forum Canada.
