CANARIE Welcomes Imraan Bashir, Jean-Charles Fahmy, and Kevin Hall to its Board of Directors

CANARIE welcomes Imraan Bashir, Jean-Charles Fahmy, and Kevin Hall to its Board of Directors and thanks retiring Directors, Eddy Campbell, Christine Fung, and John Weigelt for their significant contributions to the Board. CANARIE is grateful for the tremendous engagement, insight, and commitment of Eddy, Christine, and John during their tenure, and wishes them the best in future endeavours.

The new Directors were elected at the CANARIE Annual General Meeting held on September 18, 2024.

Imraan Bashir is a Partner and the National Public Sector Cyber Leader at KPMG in Canada, with over 20 years of experience in cybersecurity. His expertise spans governance, strategy, incident management, cloud security, risk management, and digital identity. Before joining KPMG, Imraan was a senior executive in the public sector directing the policy, strategy, implementation, and oversight of the federal government’s enterprise-wide cyber initiatives, including leadership of key programs such as cloud security and digital identity.

Known for his pragmatic approach to cybersecurity, Imraan focuses on managing cyber risks while ensuring a positive digital user experience. His work has earned global recognition, and he was named one of the world’s top 100 most influential people in digital government by Apolitical in 2019.

Jean-Charles (JC) Fahmy currently serves as the President and CEO of CENGN, Canada’s Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks, leading the organization in driving the growth and global competitiveness of Canada’s innovation economy by working with the information and communication technology ecosystem. 

With over 25 years of global leadership experience in technology, JC has a strong track record of creating value and accelerating business performance across public, private equity, and venture capital-backed companies.  

Kevin Hall presently serves as the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Victoria. As a civil engineer, he has a deep commitment to equitable access to education and has served in various leadership roles throughout his career at top institutions. 

Throughout his career at three world-class institutions, Kevin has served at many levels and functions – from faculty member, research centre director and department chair, to vice-president and senior deputy vice-chancellor of global engagement and partnerships. He has applied his expertise globally, delivering knowledge to industry and communities, and playing a key role in establishing academic and research initiatives that benefit students, staff, and the research and education community at large.

CANARIE’s Board of Directors is comprised of an equal number of individuals from industry and academia. Directors bring a variety of skills and experience to the Board, and their backgrounds in the academic, institutional, private, and public sectors ensure CANARIE’s programs and services anticipate and effectively address the evolving needs of the research, education, and innovation communities. Directors are elected for one-year renewable terms, and all Directors serve on at least one standing committee of the Board.
