CANARIE welcomes Dr. Barb Carra, Art Exner, and Christine Fung to its Board of Directors and thanks retiring Directors, Bala Kathiresan and Gopi Chande, for their significant contributions to the Board. CANARIE is grateful for the tremendous engagement, insight, and commitment of Bala and Gopi during their tenure, and wishes them the best in future endeavours.
The new Directors were elected at the CANARIE Annual General Meeting held on September 19, 2023.
Dr. Barb Carra presently serves as President and CEO of Cybera, Alberta’s Research and Education Network. Barb is a champion for the digital needs of Canadians, and frequently meets with all levels of government to ensure that Albertans have access to a connected, secure, and equitable digital future.
Barb currently sits on the Boards for The Calgary Zoo and Wilder Institute, the Saskatchewan Research & Education Network (SRNET), and recently received a Governor in Council appointment to The Canada Revenue Agency Board of Management
Art Exner presently serves the University of Regina in the role of Associate Vice-President, Information Services, through which he is responsible for charting the strategic information technology plans for the University to achieve improved business outcomes in an increasingly client-centric service model.
Committed to community service, Art serves in many capacities for a number of organizations, including the Boards of the Canadian University Council of Chief Information Officers (CUCCIO) and of SRNET, the Digital Research Alliance of Canada’s Cybersecurity Steering and Advisory Committee, and CANARIE’s Cybersecurity Advisory Committee; the Saskatchewan Post-Secondary Cybersecurity Committee; and CUCCIO’s Cybersecurity Special Interest Group.
Christine Fung is the Director of Finance at TELUS and leads the corporate financial planning and analysis, asset management, and capital management teams.
A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Christine is currently furthering her knowledge on how finance leaders can contribute to a sustainable economy, deliver on ‘purpose’, and generate positive value for society by attending the Accounting for Sustainability academy programme.

CANARIE’s Board of Directors is comprised of an equal number of individuals from industry and academia. Directors bring a variety of skills and experience to the Board, and their backgrounds in the academic, institutional, private, and public sectors ensure CANARIE’s programs and services anticipate and effectively address the evolving needs of its research, education, and innovation stakeholder communities. Directors are elected for one-year renewable terms, and all Directors serve on at least one standing committee of the Board.
